Fascinating insights into the history of carpet making with live demonstrations on the largest hand-knotted loom - ideal for school groups at Killybegs Maritime & Heritage Visitor Centre, Co. Donegal, Ireland
Children can learn about the history of what life was like for their forefathers, the type of fish species captured by fishermen in bygone days, the knots and rope ties that were essential to fashion quality nets and creels, and compare the history with their lifestyles today. Children receive a 'Certificate of Attendance' after having completed the tour.

Sailing skills

The Bridge Simulator gallery helps young people understand key navigational issues: plotting a course; negotiating deep and shallow waters; reading charts; and taking into account factors like weather conditions. Schools groups can book the bridge for one-hour sessions on weekdays or weekends. The staff guide will book groups to help focus and extend their learning.

Would your group like to meet some real Killybegs fishermen or some of the people who work in boat building, marine engineering or net making? Visits to some industrial premises may be possible, depending on numbers or circumstances.

Special exhibitions or talks can be arranged if sufficient notice is given. Please contact us with your school tour requirements.

Also recommended is the Folk Village and Oideas Gael Irish Language & Cultural in the village of Glencolmcille.
